Take a trip back in time the Sunset Lounge combines functionality and comfort while incorporating a groovy vibe. The lounge is inspired by the time period of the architecture building’s construction and late architect Janis Kravis’s design for Carleton’s University Center from the 1970s. The lounge enables a working and collaborative environment during the day for teams or individuals. The couch and TVs allow groups to work on projects together, while table seating allows for studying, eating and chatter. During the night, the lounge’s atmosphere changes, inspired by the speakeasy’s ambient lighting and casual atmosphere. The lounge transforms into a space for late-night talks between friends, a quiet place to take a power nap before an all-nighter or to grab a midnight snack. The Sunset Lounge incorporates distinct interior decor. Such as a pattern from Marimekko from the 1970s to create the mural on the north wall. Marimekko patterns were seen all over the UC in the 1970s due to Janis’s incorporation of them. In the lounge architectural pieces designed by architect Janis Kravis can be seen, including butcher block style benches reused as coffee tables and round-shaped study tables with wood finishings, both were made specifically for Carleton in the 1970s. The layout of the room fosters interaction between the community. Having a kitchenette with a vending machine at the back of the room encourages even those just passing in and out to meet and greet those using the space. The kitchenette-style bar and seating also allow for the lounge to become a great place to have social gatherings for school events or to host refreshments for visiting faculty during crits. The Sunset Lounge brings a vibrance to the architecture building to help motivate and inspire while enabling relaxation and comfort.
